Smothered Cabbage

I keep meaning to try this one. Now that I have posted it, perhaps I will be motivated to do so.


1 medium head of cabbage, cored and chopped
5 slices of bacon
salt, pepper, and hot sauce to taste


Fry bacon in heavy pot. Add chopped cabbage. Cover. Stir occasionally (cabbage will brown in bacon drippings as the two cook together). Cook for about 30 minutes. Season to taste. Serve hot.

  1. My mother-in-law made this for years, except she did not leave the bacon in the cabbage, she either rendered the bacon fat and saved the cooked bacon for later, or used bacon grease left over from breakfast.

    It is excellent.

  2. My Grandmother made this all the time when I was growing up, and I ate it and savored it every time she made it. One of my all time favorite dishes. She made hers the same way, so good.
